I painted this mini up for the Chick Challenge online competition, now run by Legio Pictorum. I managed to get third place in the fantasy category, which I am quite thrilled about. I decided to try out painting sheer effect on clothing and asked Mark to try the same as well on his Valkyrie model.

The base was carved out of a baked piece of sculpy. The stones on it have 3 levels of depth. Although the top most layer I had to heighten with green stuff. This was just inexperience, as I should have started out with a thicker slab of sculpy, even if that meant a lot more work carving.

For me, this mini was all about transition of colours. From the dragon's dark frame to its skin wings; the colours on the dress; the gloves and stockings; and of course, the sheer effect on the torso and bum.

For the sheer effect, I found it easier to paint the skin colour first, and then glaze over the top of it with the pale blue colour.

The dragon familiar is supposed to be smoke, although I painted the wing parts a skin colour. I tried to make it look like the dark smoke colour transitioned to the dwarf flesh colour, but it was not that successful, as I would have had to mask a lot more of the darker dwarf flesh colour (which I quite liked). The edges of the black dragon have small white swirls which were glazed over with dark blue/black. It doesn't look that good though as it looks like its dry brushed.

Her red gloves and red stockings are not sheer, even though it may look like such an attempt. I just wanted to try transition the dark red to a dark bone type colour.

The eyes on the sculpt are big and well defined, so for the first time I was able to paint a white glint on dark iris.
