Painting time: ~28hrs.
This was the second model I painted for Weisern and his Alchemists. The neuromancer took around 25 hours to paint, with a further 3 hours for the base. The base was meant to recall an underground sewer area beneath the Dirz laboratories, but I wasn't quite successful - the colours are a little light, not dark and atmospheric enough, and the cobblestone wall is a little out of place. But never mind, it was a learning experience!
The colours are quite similar to the official Rackham version. Although I initially intended to create a slightly different colour scheme, as I was painting the model the colours just seemed to fall into place - I think the Rackham version has the perfect colour scheme!
There has been a lot of interest in the green glowing OSL part, but the way I painted it is a fairly simple, easy variation of the technique. I left it for the end after everything else was painted, because the light needs to be cast on the top layer over mud, scratches, everything. Then I mixed the appropriate colour - the same green colour as the glowing object, but darker - and thinned it with a lot with water. I usually use matte medium for this as well, because the medium I use is very viscous; by adding some to the mixture, I can increase the viscosity while maintaining a very low opacity. This makes it easier to work with sometimes, because the higher viscosity can give more control and prevent paint from pooling in cracks etc, which is not wanted for this technique. I painted this light green mixture in thin coats over the areas where light coming from the glowing object would fall, gradually building up the colour with multiple layers, so that the strongest colour is closest to the source of light and fades away as you go further away. Then the steps were repeated two or three times, progressively adding white to the mixture, and painting closer to the object to give the illusion of the light getting brighter closer to the origin of the glow. And that's about it!
